What are Direct Drive Wind Turbines?

Typical, gear-driven wind turbines and their high repairs and expenses in maintaining them, have been the bane of the wind power industry's existence. The most expensive and time-consuming aspects of keeping typical wind turbines online, have been their gearboxes, and internal workings and "drive" or transmission.

Better days are coming for the wind energy industry with the end of wind turbines with gears, gearboxes and complex transmissions that convert the wind's energy into carbon free energy.

In the new generation of wind turbines, instead of using gearboxes, "direct-drive" turbines turn the generators inside "direct drive wind turbines."  In direct drive wind turbines, the rotor's shaft is coupled to the generator, which turns at the same speed as the wind turbine's blades. Direct drive wind turbines are therefore, far more reliable, with far less down-time, lower repairs and maintenance costs, and increased production of power.

Before the advent of direct-drive wind turbines, the standard wind turbine's blades turned the shaft which is connected through the gearbox to the turbine's generator.  The gearbox then converts the wind turbine's blades that spin any where from 15 to 22 revolutions per minute (RPM) for large wind turbines, into the faster 1,800 rotations per minute required to produce electricity. 

The enormous stresses from the wind's energy on the typical wind turbine's drive (wheels, bearings and transmission inside the wind turbine's gearboxes) were the #1 reason for costly repairs and downtime.  With the new direct drive wind turbines coming online, expenses will be decreasing, and power output increasing, making wind power investments an even more profitable proposition.

What is a Continuously Variable Transmission?

Continuously Variable Transmissions, or simply CVT's use a belt in the transmission that permits the car to access an unlimited number of gears or gear positions. 

Continuously Variable Transmissions provide a number of important advantages over the standard 4, 5 or 6 speed automatic transmissions, including superior fuel economy, smoother acceleration and extended transmission life.

Continuously Variable Transmissions are now being used in "direct drive wind turbines."
